bruce 3851 Playlist: Saturday Morning Flashback 11/20/10Saturday Morning Flashback1984. Yet another year that Cubs fans’ hopes and dreams were sliced and diced. The same year that XRT hired a music director named Lin Brehmer. (You’d think he would have learned to steer clear of Clark & Addison.) It was also in 1984 that the Regular Guy stepped off the Belmont bus and started sharing his unique take on movies for XRT. It was a great year for music, from the #1 album on our year-end listener poll – “Born in the USA” – to Frankie Goes to Hollywood, the Psychedelic Furs, U2’s passionate performance at the Aragon, and a popular film and award-winning soundtrack from Prince.
Hope you’ll join us next week as we groove to the tunes of 1968!

Saturday Morning Flashback 1992 [Playlist]

$

It was in 1992 when Chicagoans learned more that we ever wanted to know about the 50 miles of freight tunnels deep in the bowels of our fair city. That’s the year when a piling (learned about those, too) driven into the bottom of the Chicago River caused a leak in one of the aforementioned tunnels and, faster than you could say “Yuck!”, downtown sub-basements filled with water. Phones went down, the power was out, havoc ensued, and cleanup was unpleasant.

On the bright side, R.E.M.’s Automatic for the People topped XRT’s annual Listener Poll, along with U2’s September shows at the World Music Theatre (Best Concert), Malcom X (Best Movie), “Seinfeld” (Best TV Show), and Material Issue (Best Local Group).

Flashback: The Making of “I’m Not In Love” by 10cc [Listen]

Johnny Mars will be behind the board this weekend for Saturday Morning Flashback — 1977. He’s in the midst of preparing for the show and just dropped my a line saying he’ll give a spin to 10cc’s “I’m Not In Love” early on. This is a track full of 70s studio magic and worth checking out in more detail.

If you have a few free minutes, watch this short documentary on the making of the song below and how the band used vocal loops the create the breathy atmosphere that makes this recording so unique.

Digital dynamics, synth pads, and loop-based music make this much easier to create today, but back then this was groundbreaking.

Flashback Friday – 1992!

Let’s all go back to the year of flannel, Doc Martens, Pearl Jam, and the memory of a cub reporter losing her way around Chicago. 1992 was my first full year at XRT. I was the roving reporter, which involved driving my Chevy Nova anywhere news director Neil Parker told me to go for the story of the day. This was when Chicago’s murder rate was double the current number, and I had to assure my mother on a weekly basis that I was safe in the big city. Hey, I made it this far.

Wendy Rice will take us all the way back to 1992 on Saturday Morning Flashback on XRT.
